When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stood in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden to announce they were getting married, everyone’s eyes went straight to her left hand.
Her stunning engagement ring was definitely fit for a princess, made with two diamonds from his mum Princess Diana ‘s collection and one from Botswana, where he does a lot of charity work.
However shortly after their first wedding anniversary the stunning piece had been redesigned, and the plain gold band was replaced with a thinner micropavé one.
It was unclear why she made the change or when it happened, but Meghan couldn’t wear her ring during the final stages of her pregnancy so it’s likely that’s when she had the work done.
And now a new book about the couple has explained why the ring was changed – and it turns out it was Harry rather than Meghan’s decision.
And as well as sending her ring off for a redesign, he surprised her with a sparkly new bit of bling – with a very, very special meaning behind it.
In their biography Finding Freedom, royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write: “On May 19, 2019, Harry also surprised his wife of one year with the gift of a ring that he had created with jeweller-to-the-stars Lorraine Schwartz, a favourite of Meghan’s.
“The conflict-free diamond eternity band paid homage to the family of three with Meghan’s, Archie’s and Harry’s birthstones (peridot, emerald, and sapphire, respectively) on the underside of the ring.”
The jeweller told the authors: “Harry wanted to make it special. He’s the loveliest person ever. So romantic, so thoughtful.”
The book continues: “Harry also thought to have Lorraine resize and reset Meghan’s engagement ring with a new diamond band.”
Harry designed Meghan’s ring himself, and spoke proudly about the piece during their engagement interview.
He said: “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
