Technology has been transforming both lives and services for decades and we see many young people adopting it as a tool to challenge and change the traditional ways of doing things. In different parts of the globe, the healthcare industry is quite challenging as it needs to go through a total transformation especially in underdeveloped and developing countries.
Coming down to Nigeria, record processing in the health industry is usually too cumbersome. Medical experts have to go through lots and lots of files so as to access a patient’s medical record and history.
In a bid to improve this challenge, in Nigeria and in West Africa, Tito Ovia, an American-born Nigerian health technology entrepreneur co-founded Helium Health, a health tech company that seeks to improve the nation’s health challenges through technology.
Born in the U.S, and schooled in the UK where she studied Biomedical Sciences from the University of Manchester, Tito witnessed high standards in the health sector of developed nations. Coming down to Nigeria, she saw and had an understanding of how starkly below the health standard is. Having experienced living abroad she decided to do something about it.
Alongside Adegoke Olubusi and Dimeji Sofowora, she co-founded a technology company called Helium Health that helps hospitals digitize their health records and streamline their processes.
They offer electronic management records (EMR) to health institutions. These EMR have helped these institutions greatly as they can even access loans by having a clear and proper record.
Helium Health is used by 5,000 health professionals and currently attends to over 165,000 patients per month.
Before starting her career, Tito worked for Orbis in Mongolia and also for the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency.
Helium Health, formerly known as OneMedical won the Etisalat Prize for innovation in 2016 after which it was accepted into Y combinator in 2017 and also received two million dollars in investment from VCs all over the globe.
In 2019, Tito alongside her partners featured on Forbes 30 Under 30 US and also made it to the Canada Health Care list that same year.
Currently, Tito is the Head of Public Sector growth in Helium Health and interacts with clients from the public sector.
