Hello Admin,

Recently, I walked into an argument around one of the surrounding villages in Abraka (not real town but in Delta state).

A young man was complaining that before the lock-down he did his traditional marriage but while waiting for church wedding, the banned on social gathering was enacted due to this CoronaVirus pandemic. So the wedding was postponed indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the bride is still at her parents home as agreed after the wedding before moving in with her husband.

Now, from the look of things, the banned on social gathering may take the whole of this year and over a month now they did their traditional marriage.

The guy is saying now that the lady should move in to her matrimonial home and after the lift of the banned they will go for blessed marriage. Both her parents and the bride said never until the wedding is done.

We were amazed, the question that came to mind are: who really join man and woman together as husband and wife, Parents or religion priest? What significant role does the church wedding play in our marriage life?

Apart from the wedding reported Jesus attended in Caina, was there any synagogue recorded in the Bible that hold wedding? Most marriages recorded were done according to the Jews culture.

Even the wedding Jesus attended, the name of the synagogue was not mentioned neither the officiating priests and Jesus was more of a guest that an official in such ceremony.

Please advise …

  1. The parents are wrong because they have collected bride price already. Instead of going back and forth, simply call in a pastor to perform Christian rites at home or via zoom.

  2. The man Gas fulfilled his duty to her family and honoured her in-front of family and friends. The church can be done anytime. Some even do it 10 years later like a vow renewal. They only want the church wedding because that is what is in now.
Are you willing to wait for as long as the lockdown last to please everyone including your wife or are you willing to keep that wedding money aside NO MATTER WHAT and live with your wife now? Because if you don’t do that church wedding it will cause you problems in your marriage for sure. Unless YOU BOTH can put your foot down as HUSBAND AND WIFE.
In my opinion your in the right.

  3. The couple could talk to the minister in their Church if the Church wedding could hold with not more than 20 guests since that’s the bone of contention by the girl’s family.

We are religious people and we believe so much if our faith as per Church. If that’s what the girl’s family are saying please kindly respect their opinion and be patient. Afterall you have the lady till death so you part….

  4. To me, if they bride’s family insists that wedding must be done, they should device a means to do it in a workable place and time within the limits given! I don’t know what’s it with Society weddings! I believe the bride’s family are efizy people that wants to show off and collect rites! Those things can be done after the corona virus issue. Let the groom calm down and work with the bride’s family and reach an agreement as to that provided the Church is duely informed and they participate in the arrangement

  5. They’re married already so I see no reason why they must have a ceremony, the pastor can bless them and life goes on.

  6. The matter is simple, they should gather both families together, call a pastor to bless the marriage and everyone should go their ways, while you go home with your wife. Case close. Your wife will be very insensitive if she desires a ceremony at this time.

  7. Very simple…
The couple can go to church with their parents for pastor to join them together if that’s what will bring peace….then after the lockdown they can go ahead with whatever party they want to have.
    Regards.

  8. Significance of church wedding
Christians believe that marriage is a gift from God, one that should not be taken for granted. It is the right atmosphere to engage in s*xual relations and to build a family life. Getting married in a church, in front of God, is very important.

A marriage is a public declaration of love and commitment. This declaration is made in front of friends and family in a church ceremony.
First, a church wedding recognizes God’s divine plan for marriage and indicates that the bride and groom seek the blessings of heaven upon their relationship and the home they are establishing.

Second, a church wedding signifies that the couple acknowledges the importance of being bound together by a spiritual love.
Now here is what you should do
Kindly call your pastor (the angel of the church) to join you both together true video call, then you are good to go. after lockdown you guys can throw yourself a party(reception & others). The yo

  9. The blessings of parents matter in the union of a man and a woman. Since the bride’s parents doesn’t want their daughter to go to her matrimonial home without a church wedding, then there’s no need to question them.

The best thing the groom can do is to have a lengthen discussion with them and suggest how the church wedding could take place during this COVID-19 period. They can still be joined together. They just need to do it lowkey with the priest/pastor, groom’s parents and bride’s parent. That should work unless the bride’s parents are not yet ready to let their daughter leave the family house finally or they are insistent on having their relatives and friends present during the occasion. If that’s the case, then the bride is going no where without her parents’ support and blessing.

    It is well !!!

  10. Hello,

Traditional wedding is carried out by the customs and traditions of the land. So also is the Christian wedding. It must be done by the principles given by the bible.

This is a simple matter. If your in-laws are Christians, then its important that you respect their beliefs. A Christian marriage must be blessed by an ordained man of God. The traditional wedding is to show respect for the elders of the family.

A Christian marriage only becomes valid only when it is blessed by an ordained minster.

All you need do is have a small meeting in their compound, observe social distance liek we have been seeing alot of people do these days.,let their pastor come and bless the marriage. And then, your wife can go with you.

You can also have the ordained minister do this online as well.

You can have a big ceremony after the lock down if you still wish to.

    No big deal here.

  11. Marriage is an agreement between a man and a woman with the consent of the parents. The rest are just formalities. Church wedding itself is an English man’s tradition. The priest can bless you both in the presence of close family members and that’s all. But if they insist on public wedding then accord them that respect.

  12. Traditional is okay for now na. They should acknowledge what is happening right now and be generous with decisions
